Wedding percussionist with your DJ
Wedding entertainment with live djembe and digital percussion, alongside your DJ. For the drinks reception, the first dance and above all the party.
Why live percussion works at a wedding
A wedding brings together guests aged 8 to 80. Live percussion bridges that gap: younger guests dance to the beat, everyone else watches it happen.
I'm Sam Anderson, a live percussionist based near Kortrijk, Belgium. Since 2022 I have played at 27 weddings, from farmhouse venues in West Flanders to castles in East Flanders and party venues in Walloon Brabant. I play with your DJ: they choose the music, I add live rhythm on top.
The difference with a DJ alone? Your guests see the music being made. A blue LED djembe in the middle of the dance floor pulls in the people who would otherwise stay at the bar. When the mood is right, I invite the two of you or a guest to play along. Those are the photos and clips you'll watch again and again.
I don't play non-stop all night. I pick the moments: a build-up, a drop, the track your friends have been waiting for. Sometimes subtle, sometimes full force. Always leaving room for the music and for you.

The moments of your day
Drinks reception
Relaxed grooves on djembe or digital bongos while guests arrive and raise a glass. I can roam among them. More on reception and party.
Grand entrance and first dance
A building rhythm as you walk into the room, or live accents on your first dance that kick off the party. See entrance and first dance.
The party
This is where it hits hardest. After the DJ's opening block, I play sets as the dance floor fills up. Afro house, latin house, retro house or party classics: the djembe and digital instruments fit right in.

With your wedding DJ or a DJ from my network
Already booked a DJ? Great. After you book, I contact your DJ myself to agree on music style, timing and connections. The digital percussion goes into the DJ's mixer, by cable or wirelessly, so everything sounds as one. Read more on percussionist for your DJ.
No DJ yet? I'll suggest one from my network. I often play as a duo with the Friends of Sam. We know each other's timing, and you have one point of contact for DJ and percussion. See also DJ with live percussion.

Practicalities: venue, sound and timing
Venue sound limiters
Many venues in Flanders use a sound limiter, usually set to 85 dB(A) averaged over 60 minutes, or up to 95 or 100 dB(A) with registration. Short percussion peaks can trigger a limiter and cut the music for a moment. That's why I agree on it beforehand with the DJ and the venue. Digital percussion runs through the DJ's mixer and stays within the same sound budget. Check with your venue which limiter is installed. More on djembe or digital percussion.
Setup
I bring everything: djembe, drum pads, stands, in-ears, wireless receivers and cables. The venue only provides power. For a fixed setup next to the DJ, a space of about two by two metres is enough. Full details on the technical rider.
Timing
I'm on site for 60, 90 or 120 minutes, split into short sets. Most couples choose the party after dessert or after the first dance. Send me your schedule and I'll make a proposal.
Packages for your wedding
The djembe is part of every package. The bigger the package, the richer the sound. Extra hours are always possible.

Questions about live percussion at weddings
Question not listed? Send me a message.
When does a percussionist play at a wedding?
Usually during the party, where live percussion has the biggest impact. I can also play at the drinks reception, for your grand entrance or during the first dance. We plan the sets together from your schedule, so they follow the flow of the evening.
How long do you play at a wedding?
I'm on site for 60, 90 or 120 minutes depending on the package. That time is split into short sets, because playing djembe for a full hour non-stop doesn't work. You can extend by the hour.
Does our DJ need to change anything?
Very little. The DJ needs a free input on the mixer for the digital percussion. After booking, I contact them to agree on style, timing and connections. My rider is sent automatically to the DJ and the venue.
What if our venue has a sound limiter?
That's common and it can be handled. Percussion peaks can trigger a limiter, so we agree on it beforehand with the DJ and the venue. Digital percussion runs through the DJ's mixer and stays within the same sound budget. Ask your venue which limiter they use.
Can guests play the djembe?
Yes, when the mood is right I invite the couple or a guest to play along for a moment. It often gives the best photos and videos of the night. Nobody has to: those who prefer dancing, dance.
Can you play outdoors, in a garden or a marquee?
Yes, as long as there is power and the setup stays dry. A marquee, covered terrace or veranda is fine. If it rains and there's no cover, we find a spot inside together. Mention the venue in your request.
How far in advance should we book?
For a Saturday between May and September, book six to twelve months ahead. Other dates often stay free for longer. Check your date with the form and you'll know within 24 hours whether I'm available.
Do you play at weddings outside Belgium?
Yes, I'm available in northern France, the Netherlands and for destination weddings. The first 100 km from Kortrijk are included; after that a mileage fee applies. More on international bookings.
